Operation Homecoming (2007)

There are many documentaries out right now about the war in Iraq, and this is not the best one. For one thing, it's only an hour long and edited for graphic language so that it could air on PBS.
But it is unique in that it uses the actual writings of soldiers themselves instead of being a commentary on the war by a journalist or political activist. For that alone, the film is worth watching and a powerful and needed entry into the glut of new film devoted to the topic.
Voiceovers from Hollywood actors reading soldiers' letters are interspersed with actual soldier interviews and comments from famous writers on the topic of war, including Tim O'Brien, one of the best.
The letters are brought to life in a variety of ways. My favorite segment was actually animated...and very darkly so.
We owe it to ourselves to get the story from those who can truly tell the story.

2.5 out of 4
