Waitress (2007)

File this one under "breath of fresh air." A film with genuine heart that doesn't make you work to like it, Waitress was written and directed by Adrienne Shelly, who was tragically killed right around the time of the film's festival premiere.
I have to be honest in saying that Shelly's role, along with the part played by Cheryl Hines, is a part that's been written before and played better in other diner-set movies like Frankie and Johnny, so in that sense, Waitress treads worn territory. But Keri Russell was surprisingly good in this film, and what a treat to see Andy Griffith doing something so late in his life!
"Cute" just about sums up the film, even though the story is quite dramatic.
Not a fantastic film, but a charmer. And sometimes a charmer is good enough.

2.5 out of 4
